How SkillsFuture funding works: the whole system in plain English

SkillsFuture funding has two moving parts: credit that lowers your course fee, and allowances that support you while you train. Once you see it that way the whole system gets simple, and this page walks through both, plus how to check your balance and claim.

What are the two parts of funding?

The first part is credit, which reduces what you pay for a course. SkillsFuture Credit is the main one. The second part is allowances, which are separate support to help you while you train, for your time off work or job searching.

Keeping these two apart is the single most useful thing to understand. Credit changes the price of the course. Allowances support you around the course.

What support applies to you?

How do you actually get funded?

The process is the same across schemes, three steps:

1. Check eligibility and your balance. Log in with Singpass to see your SkillsFuture Credit and any allowance you qualify for.

2. Find an eligible course. Use the MySkillsFuture portal and check the course page for its funding.

3. Claim before you start. Submit your SkillsFuture Credit claim online before the course start date, and apply for any allowance through the right channel.

The practitioner tip: do this in order. Confirm eligibility and the course’s funding before you enrol, because claims and allowances are tied to timelines.

What do people usually get wrong?

Two things. They assume the “top up” is cash they can spend freely, it is not, credit offsets fees. And they assume the rules are fixed, they change, especially now that the agency has been reorganised. Always confirm the current details on the official page before you rely on a figure.
