SkillsFuture Credit explained: what it is, who gets it, and how to use it
SkillsFuture Credit helps Singaporeans offset course fees for eligible courses that support skills and lifelong learning. Every Singapore Citizen aged 25 and above gets it, it does not expire, and this page explains the two tiers and how to actually use it.
What is SkillsFuture Credit, and who is it for?
SkillsFuture Credit is a government support that reduces the out-of-pocket fee for approved courses. It is for all Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above, and it is administered under the Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA).
It is important to understand that it offsets fees, it does not pay you. You still enrol in a course; the credit reduces what you pay.
How much is it, and does it expire?
There are two tiers. Here is the official picture:
Tier | Who | Amount | Use it for | Expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Opening Credit | Singapore Citizens aged 25+ | $500 | All courses on the MySkillsFuture portal | Does not expire |
Mid-Career | Singapore Citizens aged 40+ | $4,000 | Selected courses with better employability outcomes | Does not expire |
The Mid-Career tier is more targeted: it covers selected courses such as full qualifications from Institutes of Higher Learning, SkillsFuture Career Transition Programmes, and courses aligned to Progressive Wage Model sectors.
What can you spend it on?
The Opening Credit works on all courses listed on the MySkillsFuture portal. That includes courses approved or subsidised by SWDA, selected courses from MOE-funded institutions, and courses from lead agencies. The practical rule for any learner is simple: if the course is on MySkillsFuture, check its page for the credit label.
A useful detail most people miss: the credit stacks. You can apply it on top of existing course-fee subsidies, which is what makes a well-chosen course very affordable.
How do you actually use it?
Three steps, all online:
Log in with Singpass to check your available balance.
Browse eligible courses on the MySkillsFuture portal.
Submit your claim online before the course start date.
Check the course’s own page for its credit eligibility and any required documents before you enrol, not after. Claims are tied to timelines, so do it in the right order.
If you were reading this hoping to put that credit towards a Leaders Hangar course specifically, it's worth being upfront: our courses are not on the SkillsFuture directory, so SkillsFuture Credit and training allowances cannot be claimed against them. Fees are priced with that in mind, they land in roughly the same range you would pay for a subsidised course once the subsidy has been taken off, so the amount that actually leaves your pocket is comparable, minus the eligibility checks, the application window and the wait for approval. Join the Leaders Hangar waitlist if that trade-off works for you.
Key takeaways
SkillsFuture Credit offsets course fees for eligible courses; it is not cash.
Two tiers: a $500 Opening Credit at age 25, and a $4,000 Mid-Career top-up at age 40.
Neither tier expires.
It can be used on top of other government course-fee subsidies.
You claim it online with Singpass, before the course start date, for courses on the MySkillsFuture portal.
