Singapore Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) explained: what the qualification is and why it matters

WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) is Singapore’s national system that trains, assesses and certifies work skills. A WSQ course leads to a recognised, portable credential, and this page explains how the system works and why employers take it seriously.

What is WSQ?

WSQ is a national credential system that trains, develops, assesses and certifies the skills and competencies of Singapore's workforce, as set out on the official SWDA page. It is built to be practical and covers two things, not just one: Technical Skills and Competencies, which take reference from the national Skills Frameworks and map to a specific job role, and Critical Core Skills, the transferable, cross-cutting skills, things like communication and problem-solving, that support moving between roles and industries rather than depth in just one.

The key word is competency-based. WSQ certifies that you can actually do a defined skill to an industry standard, not just that you attended a class.How does WSQ work?

It is modular and flexible, designed so you can learn at your own pace.

• Each module you complete earns a Statement of Attainment (SOA).

• Relevant SOAs can be accumulated towards a WSQ Full Qualification.

• Important condition: to build a Full Qualification, the modules must be taken with the same approved training provider. If that is your goal, tell your provider before you enrol.

Why does a WSQ course carry weight?

Because it is quality-assured end to end. From how skills are defined, to how training providers are approved, to how qualifications are awarded, stringent criteria apply, and the qualification is awarded by SWDA or in partnership with established awarding bodies.

For an individual, that means a portable credential that demonstrates your skills to any employer. For an employer, it is a reliable signal when hiring or developing staff.

The certificate itself has moved on too: since 1 July 2024, WSQ qualifications are issued as digital certificates through OpenCerts, verified on blockchain and held in the learner's Careers and Skills Passport, rather than a paper certificate that is easy to lose and slower to verify.

Is WSQ right for you?

WSQ suits you if you want a recognised qualification and a clear skills pathway, especially if you value portability and prior-learning recognition. If you only need a quick, specific skill and do not need the formal credential, a shorter non-WSQ course may be enough. Both can sit on the MySkillsFuture portal; the difference is the formal, stackable qualification at the end.
