Marketing content is anything you publish to attract, convince or keep a customer: a webpage, an article, a video, an email, a social post. It only works when it does a real job for the reader, and this short guide covers what separates useful content from noise.

What counts as marketing content?

Anything a potential customer reads, watches or hears from you, made on purpose to move them closer to buying. That is broader than blog posts: your homepage, a pricing page, a case study and a reply to a comment are all marketing content.

The label matters less than the intent. If it is meant to help a buyer and represent you well, it is marketing content, and it deserves the same care as everything else you publish.

What makes marketing content actually work?

Three things, together.

    M["On-message
sounds like you,
says one thing"]
    F["Findable
reachable by search,
social or email"]

  • Useful. It helps the reader, teaches, clarifies, or saves them time. Useless content is ignored no matter how polished.

  • On-message. It sounds like you and makes one clear point. Content that tries to say everything says nothing.

  • Findable. It reaches people through search, social or email. The best piece helps no one if nobody sees it.

Weak content usually has one of the three and hopes the other two do not matter. Strong content has all three.

How do you tell good content from filler?

Ask what the piece is for and who it is for. If you cannot name the one reader and the one job, it is filler. Good content leaves the reader with something they can use and a clear sense of who you are.

Ignore publishing to hit a quota. A calendar full of thin posts costs time and builds nothing. One useful piece a week compounds.

Key takeaways

  • Marketing content is anything you publish to win a customer.

  • It works when it is useful, on-message, and findable. Miss one and it underperforms.

  • Every piece should have one job and one reader in mind.

  • Good content is an asset that keeps working, not a one-off post.

  • Judge content by what it causes (enquiries, trust), not by how it looks.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is a certificate worth it?

A certificate has some signalling value, but employers and clients care far more about what you can actually do, so weight the course on capability first.

How long should a good course be?

Long enough to build a real skill and short enough to finish; a focused course applied to your own work beats a long one done in the abstract.

Do I need to know how to code?
