SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work of getting your pages to show up when people search Google for what you offer, without paying for the click. For most Singapore owners the real question is not “what is SEO” but “should I learn this myself or pay an agency”, and this page answers both.

What is SEO, really?

SEO is being genuinely the clearest, most useful answer to a specific search, and making it easy for Google to see that. It is not tricks or keywords stuffed into a page; those stopped working years ago.

Notice that most Singapore searches for “seo” come from businesses looking for an agency. That tells you demand is high and most owners assume they cannot do it themselves. You can do the fundamentals, and understanding them makes you a far better buyer even if you do decide to hire help.

What actually moves the needle in SEO?

Three levers, in order of how often they are ignored.

    A["Authority
other sites and pages
trust and link to you"]
    H["Health
Google can crawl
and understand your site"]

  • Relevance. Pages that answer a real search clearly and completely. This is where you win most of the battle, and where most SMEs stop.

  • Authority. Other trustworthy sites referencing yours. It is earned slowly, through work worth citing, not bought.

  • Health. The plumbing: fast pages, clean structure, and nothing blocking Google from reading you. Boring, but a broken site cannot rank.

The practitioner rule: most owners obsess over one lever (usually keywords) and never touch the other two. Balance beats intensity.

Should you learn SEO or hire an agency?

Be honest about how central search is to your business. Use this as a guide.

If this is true for you

Do this

Search is a main way customers find you

Build the skill in-house; it is too core to rent forever

You need occasional technical fixes

Hire a specialist for that specific job

You cannot yet judge good SEO from bad

Learn the fundamentals first, then buy better

An agency promises number-one rankings, fast

Walk away; no one controls Google, and guarantees are a warning sign

How long does SEO take to work?

Expect months, not days. SEO is slow to start because trust and content build over time, but it is durable: a page that ranks keeps earning visits long after you publish it. That is the opposite of paid ads, which stop the moment you stop paying. Treat SEO as an asset you build, not a tap you switch on.

What this looks like in practice

Take a small events-ticketing business with one marketer handling everything. For three months, that marketer picks one page a week and rewrites it to answer one real question a customer has typed into Google — “how early should I book for a weekend show,” “what’s included in a group booking” — instead of generic pages about the business itself. By month three: eleven rewritten pages, four of them ranking on page one for their target question, and a jump from roughly 40 to 210 monthly organic visits to those pages specifically, tracked in Search Console. No page one ranking came from technical tricks; every one came from a page that actually answered the question better than what was already ranking. That is the relevance lever doing the work alone, before authority or site health were touched at all.

How do you know your SEO is working?

Track qualified visits from Google, not rankings alone. Google Search Console is free and shows what you rank for and what people actually click. Then watch the enquiries and sign-ups that come from organic search, that is the number that pays, and the one to report.

Key takeaways

  • SEO earns free, ongoing traffic from Google by being the best answer to what your customers search.

  • Three levers move SEO: relevance (the right content), authority (other sites trust you), and health (Google can read your site). Most SMEs only work on one.

  • SEO compounds. It is slow to start and hard to stop once it works, the opposite of paid ads.

  • Learn it in-house if search is a core channel for you. Hire out only specialist, occasional work.

  • If you cannot measure qualified visits from Google, you cannot manage your SEO. Google Search Console is free and enough to start.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay for SEO tools?

No, you can start with Google Search Console, which is free and shows most of what you need. Paid tools help at scale, not at the beginning.

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No, AI answers still pull from well-structured, trustworthy pages, so the same fundamentals now also help you get cited by AI assistants.

How is SEO different from Google Ads?

The full refund, transfer and cancellation policy lives in the terms and conditions.
